« Dendrobates azureus » est une variante morphologique de l'espèce Dendrobates tinctorius^[1].

Son nom en langue indienne Tiriyó est Okopipi. Elle tient son nom de sa coloration bleu azur qui lui a apporté une grande popularité chez les herpétophiles amateurs.
